Downtempo, nu-disco and even a little deep house. Pretty solid LP all the way through...

Magda - Fabric Mix 49 (2009)

i'm not usually a fan of minimal, but i really enjoy this funky, spooky, italian horror film soundtrack inspired minimal from magda, only the third woman to join the fabric ranks.
"The mix is inspired by Italian horror film soundtracks from the '70s," Magda explains. "I included the band Goblin, who made some very interesting dark disco, with trippy and drawn out psychedelic elements. I wanted to create something dark and groovy with a soundtrack feel to it, where sounds emerge and disappear, creating a spooky atmosphere. I chose tracks which were somewhat experimental along with dance tracks I like. I was very happy to be able to use 'Heavy Whispers' by Yello because they are one of the most interesting bands for me. They had the ability to combine very different sounds and make some of my favorite new wave/electro/disco tracks ever. I also used a lot of unreleased tracks from producers whom I've met online and received demos from. It's nice to be able to support younger artists and their sound when I can."
maybe i like minimal more than i thought....
(thanks again to our man djihad joe for the rec.)

Rockets - Galaxy (1980)

Old school electro space-rock from a bunch of bald, silvery aliens who crash landed their synthship in Paris in the early 70's. Def check out some of their videos on youtube, too.

Maserati/Zombi - Split EP (2009)
All these Maserati songs appear on the Passages release - this though, is the limited 1000-press vinyl edition with space-rock contemporaries, Zombi. But don't let the album cover fool you - you're about to get your ass kicked.
The Athens natives creep in on the EP with ancient druids chanting the sacred rock mantra of "Oh Yeah!" as rumblings of the Maserati war machine grow louder and louder and louder...then they drop into the hypnotic "No More Sages." While it's a great track with its chugging bass and guitar texturing, this was all a smokescreen to sneak in their secret weapon. Channeling the Gods of Led Zeppelin for the bassline power of "Immigrant Song", Maserati destroys you with the heavy hitting "Monoliths." Then they all ride out on the pulsating synths of "Thieves," and dissipate back out into the depths of space to hand off the baton to Zombi...
Just to make sure the job is done, Zombi takes over and spaces us out further with "Infinity," a track that builds up with sweeping atmospherics before the WHACK! BAM! BOOM! clue you in to the drumming onslaught that's about to ensue. Have patience because then...8:18 happens.
And as Zombi's embers fade into the nebulous distance...snap, crackle, pop.
Grab this one and blast it.
A1.) Maserati - Join Us, Mystic Sister / No More Sages (1:18 / 5:01)
A2.) Maserati - Monoliths / Thieves (6:17 / 4:20)
B1.) Zombi - Infinity (13:38)

Maserati - Inventions for the New Season (2007)

Psychedelic, instrumental post-rock from Athens, GA (greatest college town on Earth!). Post-rock that is much less distorted and more melodic than say, Explosions in the Sky. Maserati also had a better drummer, too.

some cool tech house from solomun on his debut album. some great basslines on these tracks, but what really makes the album interesting is his use of stringed instruments. check it.
